Stress Down Day

Thursday 1st February sees the first annual Stress Down Day - a stress-busting twist on the classic Dress Down Days familiar to schoolchildren and office workers up and down the country.
Stress Down Day is Samaritans' national awareness and fundraising event and aims to get across a serious message in a light-hearted way. It's a day when Samaritans will be raising awareness of the effects of stress in the workplace and encouraging people to take better care of their emotional well-being.
It's also a day when we aim to raise as much money as possible, whilst having fun, enabling Samaritans to continue providing our 24-hour emotional support service.
What's involved? What do I have to do? Encourage your colleagues to wear their slippers at work on Stress Down Day and donate £2 to Samaritans for taking part.
If lounging in comfy footware isn't practical, you can also organise a range of fun stress-down activities in the office:
- use a meeting room as a chill-out zone with low lighting and soft music, and charge people a small entry fee - set up a smoothie stall, and sell delicious healthy drinks - give out massages in return for a donation - get things off your chest by setting up a secret confessions box
On a more serious note, you could use the day to raise awareness of the problem of stress in the workplace. Use Stress Down Day as an opportunity to obtain employee feedback on stress levels, encourage employee suggestions on reducing stress at work or debate the difference between 'stress' and 'pressure'.
For more information about what you can do and how we can help, or to register your interest in taking part, please contact our admin office on 02920 645 642, or email us on cardiff/at/samaritans.org
Here are some things you can download, print and display in your office:
- Poster for you to display details of your office's activities: sdd-poster.pdf [174kb PDF] - General poster (420mm wide): sdd-poster-420mm.pdf [151kb PDF] - 4 page A5 leaftlet: sdd_A5_4pp.pdf [210kb PDF]

Torchwood! Script! Autographs!
As Captain Jack's local branch of Samaritans, we are delighted to announce that we've been given the script from Episode 3 of BBC Three's awesome TORCHWOOD (the Ghost Machine episode), by the scriptwriter. It's been autographed by the 5 main cast members and the writer herself. A huge thanks to everyone involved!
It's now on eBay, with all money raised by the auction to go to fund the running costs of the branch.

Grab yourself a piece of Science Fiction history here! And help us to continue helping others in the process.
Thanks!

Caption Competition
So, the carboot sale was a lot of fun, the weather was glorious, and we raised £140. Not to mention the fact that we now have a bit more space in the branch attic! Huge thanks to everyone that came and bought something, and an especially huge thanks to our tireless volunteers for their irresistable sales banter and fearless bartering skills.
Here's a picture of two of our most ruthless salespeople. Can you guess what's being said? Leave a comment below. There are no prizes for the winner (not even a boxful of Mills & Boon paperbacks), it's just a bit of fun.

Car Boot Sale!
We've been clearing out the attic here at the branch, and we've found enough books, records, random bric-a-brac and other interesting items to have a Car Boot Sale! Provided that the weather's not too bad, we'll be setting up stall this Sunday 5th November at Bessemer Road in Grangetown [here's a map]. Come along from 9am, say hello and grab yourself some bargains!
Recycling
With all this recent talk about global warming and irreversible climate change, we thought we'd get more involved with recycling. We've teamed up with Reclaim-It, a Newbury based company that recycle mobile phones, toner and inkjet cartridges. The phones often go to third world countries, where they make a huge difference to people's lives by enabling them to communicate easily without fixed land lines. The toners and inkjet cartridges can be refilled, and save the planet's resources by not ending up in landfill sites.
You can help us to recycle by putting a recycle point in your office or community centre - it will cost you absolutely nothing. We arrange for all the materials, all the postage, collection and delivery. What's more, for every item you recycle, we get a donation from the recycling company. Everyone wins! We supply everything you need, including envelopes and boxes. To find out more, or to request a recycle pack, please get in touch with our Admin Team on 02920 645 642, or email us on cardiff at samaritans dot org.

Time Flies...
Well, it looks like it's nearly the end of October already. Time flies! Here's a brief update on some things that have been happening recently:
We now have a MySpace page! Come over and say hello, add us as a friend to show your support and join in the fun. We've had an amazing response so far - it's our eventual aim to make friends with everyone in the whole of South Wales! And of course we won't turn anyone away from further afield, if they're keen on befriending us too. The more the merrier.
We're very grateful to Outfit in Merthyr Tydfil, who'll be holding a Halloween collection for us on Saturday 28th October - go along and see some truly scary costumes!
Super Swap: we've jumped on the swapping bandwagon! We're starting off with a green Samaritans wristband, and we want to swap it (eventually) for a brand new vehicle. Find out what's going on, what stage we're at, and how you can help by visiting the Super Swap page: superswap.wordpress.com
There's a rapidly decreasing number of shopping days left to Christmas - if you want to alieviate the hassle and stress of Christmas shopping, then get gifts and treats online through our webshop: buy.at/samaritans. There are lots of great retailers in the scheme: M&S, Amazon, HMV, play.com and many many more - buying things through our shop doesn't cost a penny extra, but we get a donation from the retailer for every purchase made. And we get an extra bonus for every purchase made in November and December.
Finally, we're still looking to recruit volunteers to ensure that our valuable service can continue. If you can help, please get in touch!

National Giving Week

16th-22nd October is National Giving Week! Could you give up something for Samaritans? It could be: * your lunch break to wash your colleagues' cars in return for donations * your dignity by wearing fancy dress * your living room by hosting a coffee morning for friends and neighbours * a cigarette a day, using the money you save as a donation
If you can spare anything for us, whether it's a few pennies, a few pounds, some of your time or expertise, or even biscuits for our volunteers, we'd love to hear from you.
Find out how to donate on our donations page, and find out how you can help us in other ways on our volunteer page.
